ART AND ACTIVISM

Art is both an opportunity to assert your own interpretation of the world and to share it.

Canadian Artist Rita McKeough, from “In the Studio With… ” Canadian Art Magazine

In this module, we consider the role that art plays in producing and reproducing shared ideas about socially acceptable gender. We’ll look at images of women in classical Western art in order to understand the ways that art making is influenced by the politics of gender. A major focus in this module will be on looking at art and hearing artists talk about how their work contributes to social justice projects.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

  • Summarize feminist critiques of the canon of Western art history
